January 2010 (BALTIMORE): CFK hosts a Strategic Planning Session for Members of the U.S.-based Chadian Diaspora

In the face a changing political context, CFK's Advisory Committee and members of the U.S. Diaspora got together to re-adjust their objectives. Participants developed new strategies to impact the root causes of instability in Chad. Fighting impunity and injustice will be this year’s focus.

With the defeat of the armed opposition and the refusal of the Government of Chad (GOC) and the international community to organize an "Inclusive and Comprehensive Dialogue," civic leaders are left to find new ways of stabilizing their country.

If not comprehensively, maybe one by one, the roots of Chad's instability can be resolved. The Government initiated anti-corruption campaign was seen by participants as a starting point on which to build and an opportunity to fight both corruption and nepotism.

Chadians identified ways to encourage their government to continue with these reforms and to seize the opportunity to replace convicted government officials with competent and qualified individuals.

March 2008 (PARIS): Inter-Chadian Debate

Theme: Inclusive Dialogue

From Concept to Implementation

Location: Confédération Nationale du Travail

The persistence of the internal Chadian crisis continues to have a devastating impact for the socio-economic and political fabric of Chadian society. Numerous peace agreements were signed between the Government of Chad, the armed opposition and the political parties, yet none have brought peace and stability back to Chad. The primary objective for all Chadians is and remains peace through democracy. For several years, each component of the crisis has asked for a truly inclusive peace dialogue, yet a coordinated implementation strategy does not exist. From this derives the necessity of this debate between members of civil society, the armed opposition and the political parties. This initiative seeks to provide a platform for consensus building to harmonize the implementation strategies of the various components of Chadian society and identify the steps that will make this dialogue a reality... The participants identify 6 pre-conditions to resolve before moving forward with a dialogue:

  1. President Deby's refusal to negotiate and his lack of credibility
  2. The release of Ibn Oumar Mahamat Saleh
  3. Cease fire
  4. Participation of all components of the crisis
  5. Support from International Stakeholders
  6. Non-existence of a National army

The meeting ended with the creation of an Independent Commission for an Inclusive Dialogue (CIDI)... Read more

February 2008 (N'DJAMENA): Emergency Assistance to Chadian Refugees

Fleeing the onslot of rebels attacking N’Djamena, thousands of Chadians and many civil society leaders cross the border into neighboring Cameroun trying to escape the retaliation of the Chadian Government against his opposition. Ibangolo Maina Abel, Wakith Tamma’s editor in chief, flees to neighboring Cameroun for safety. Government police came past his house twice to arrest him. He is forced to leave his family across the border to ensure their safety. CFK provides him and several other youth leaders with financial assistance as they make their way to Yaoundé to register with the UNHCR for political asylum.

February 2008 (N'DJAMENA): President Deby under attack

The CMU (Coordination Militaire Unifie) attacked N’Djamena on Friday February 1st, crossing half the country unhindered and unobstructed. The French and the JEM (Sudanese rebels) came to the rescue of President Deby and were able to push them out of the city. Many political and civil society opposition leaders find themselves arbitrarily incarcerated. 65,000 civilians from N’Djamena crossed over into neighboring Cameroun, fleeing the violence in the capital. CFK called an urgent online meeting of opposition leaders from the Diaspora. The meeting stressed keeping a coherent language giving the Diaspora credibility as it searches for a peaceful and honorable solution to the crisis.
